Hello all,

I'm trying to decide on new tires for my '91 Carat Vanagon and would like some opinions. Tires are a frequent topic on this list so p-mail me if you don't want to post to the whole list.

I'm trying to decide between three tires at Sears: Yokohama Y370 195/75-14(D) priced at $69, Michelin MTX 205/70-14 reinforced at $110, and the Michelin MX 185R14 at $74. The 205 and the 185 size are on the sticker above the driver's side footwell in my van.

The Y370 has an aggressive tread which would be nice for winters here in the midwest. I'm concerned about the ride being harsh and/or noisy. My van is not a camper so doesn't approach that weight so it might not need such a truck tire. Also the tire being narrower than the 205 (the same size I currently run) makes me wonder about wind wander. The price sure is right though.

The MTX looks pretty nice and all the specs are right on the money and I've read good things on the list about them-but, the price is a whopper. Is this tire worth the cash?

The MX is an unknown commodity. In the Michelin book it appears to be related somehow to the MTX. The book says the tire is similiar to an "80" size. This tire might be too narrow for my taste. But the Michelin quality is there.

TIA for any and all responses. I'll be buying tires soon so let me know.

Later, Bill Wichita, KS
