In a message dated 99-03-12 21:43:56 EST, you write:

<< I've scrounged these from various Audi 4000's in junkyards but I can't for the life of me figure how you install that 3-gauge cluster to the heater box. Are you installing it on the floor with the back of the cluster up against the heater? Or are you talking about mounting a part of the console from the 4000 to the heater box? I held one of these in my hands today and this one had the 3 holes on a cross piece that was molded to the rest of the mini console. There was a cut-out right above the gauges for the radio. >>

well, i got mine from a '81-'83 4000. anything after '83 wont work. all it is is the face plate, and gauges. you dont need the rest of the audi console or radio hole etc. you cut a section out of the vanagon plastic heater cover (remove the heater cover, and cut w/ coping or jig saw), so the back of the gauges fit in the hole youve cut. the faceplate is not that much bigger than the dia of the gauges, and is rectangular (although sides are slanted and conform to the vanagon heater cover nicely, that's why i picked it... should look something like this when installed:

vanagon dash _______________________________________________________________ I I I I \ ____________________________ / \ \ / / \ \ (gauge) (gauge) (gauge) / / \ \ /<---/-----'81-'83 Audi 4000 3 gauge faceplate \ \______________________ / / \ / \ vanagon plastic heater cover / \_______________________/

(tranny shifter here)

imagine that shape, with 3 gauges in it. thats what the faceplate and gauges look like. i used a little extra wire on my senders, so that if the heater cover needs to be removed to service the htr blower or whatever, there is some slack to remove it. once youre done, it looks stock., plus you dont have any extra gauges sticking up off the top of the dash. i will try to get some pics of it. hope this helps -

chris
