My 95 Saturn has 75,000 miles on it, and has never needed ANY repairs -- just normal oil changes and such. Doesn't use oil, and I have never had to have so much as a rattle fixed on it. I haven't wrecked it, so I don't know what it would cost to repair body damage, however, all body panels, even the roof, are replaceable without welding. Yes, the door panels are plastic, which means they resist parking lot dings and dents better than sheet metal.

My VW Westie, used only for camping trips, is a MUCH higher maintainence vehicle. I consider it practical only because I can do the work myself.
