Hope you didn't get the wrong idea on this job from members with
syncros - you definitely do NOT need any special tools to replace the
shock absorbers on a 2 wheel drive vanagon!  It's a really simple job
with just a couple of wrenches.  I recently replaced mine on my 90 GL
with KYB gas shocks from the Bus Depot - total cost about $110 and not
more than 2 hours work.  Go for it!
