I used K&N filters on my '74 bus for many years because I had aftermarket carbs and K&N was the only filter that fit. My opinion is that they're a pain in the butt to maintain. The only reason you'd want to use these on a waterboxer would be to squeeze a bit more performance out of the engine by increasing the airflow but I'm dubious of any measurable gains here unless you take other steps to increase the airflow (e.g. exhaust, valves, throttle body, AFM).

Just my opinion. I use the regular paper filters unless I'm travelling in a very dusty environment in which case I swap in one of the heavy duty syncro style filters.
