Kenneth,

Next time remove the transmission side cap screws, then remove the brake drum and flange (not always easy either) and tap out the splined stub axle with a soft mallet (best to have someone under the van hold on to the axle to avoid dropping it). Then you can take the axle assembly to the bench and work on the stripped cap screws. You could also repack the wheel bearings and replace the seals while you are at it, but I have never worn one of these out unless the seal failed and let in water.

Also, I have run into Torx type cap screws on CV joints, and an allen wrench will almost always strip these out. Just adds to the fun! Now I replace all the cap screws when I do the first CV replacement.
