The only thing that is likely to cause a cat and muffler to get "very, very hot" (even red-hot in extreme cases) is an engine that is running EXTREMELY rich. Any shop with emissions testing equipment can identify if this is the case. If it is, you will likely ruin your brand new cat in no time if you don't identify the cause (often something as simple as an 02 sensor or temp sensor) and correct it.
