The problem is in mounting the various replacements of the proper size
without hacking up the grills. Because of the size limitations of the VW
units there is very little effective reproduction of material below the
lower mid range. This is O.K. for the spoken word, but unsat for music. In
any case a low profile unit of 3 - 4" should be mountable to the REAR of the
stock grill. You can use trim screws with the heads and washers painted to
match the interior for a minimal visual impact.
In my 82 I am using a separate tweeter / woofer with external crossover.
The woofer/mids are 6.5 inch and the tweeters are domes. The tweeters are
mounted behind the stock flushmount grilles in the doors on slightly
modified mounts that were supplied with the kit. The woofers are mounted
below them on the doors using the stock grill covers. A small amount of
metal was trimmed from the doors to allow the mounting of the woofers. The
crossovers are stuffed into the dash behind and to the side of the ash tray.
Measure the location for the woofer by hand, positioning the grill on the
door below the crank, and rotating the window crank. It should be as high
and forward as possible without hitting. Mark the spot with a pencil.
Remove the door trim and check the relative position that you figured with
the orientation of the sheet metal. If you are willing to mount them lower
you will have to cut less metal. The magnet structure has to protrude into
the door void.
Check the position of the window in the down position against the depth of
the mounted speaker. When the position is determined use the template that
came with the speakers to mark the holes for them on the doors. When
mounting, orient them so as to get as many screws into the sheet metal as
possible to stiffen the assembly.
The speaker wire can be run through the ventilation holes. Weather
resistant cones are a plus. The moisture barrier will need to be modified
to cover the speaker and allow venting into the door. A flap of heavy
plastic taped above the speaker on the inside of the door will work.
The tweeters are behind the stock grills mounted with two screws each that
are seen on the face of the grills. This is a minor cosmetic sacrifice.
To complete the system I installed two 10" MTX subwoofers into custom
enclosures designed to fit beneath the middle passenger seats. They are
upward firing units with tubular vents. The system is driven with a 200
watt amp feeding a home made subwoofer crossover sitting under the driver's
seat. The sound quality is very musical in the front seat, but boomy in the
back. I have not yet figured out how to best mount a second set of two ways
in the back ... perhaps this summer.
