One for the record!

Has anyone noticed that the Syncro VS non-Syncro starters are not the same length! Well it's true. My project vehicle is turning into a real project after finding things like this out. I figured I would try out a starter that I just took out of my daily driver. It's a Syncro but no dif. lock. The core needs to be returned but I thought I would try it on for size just to make sure I had everything in place so I went ahead and checked the fit. I'm glad I did. Took about an hour to find the original starter that came off this syncro transmission, (with dif. lock) and sure enough the Syncro starter is 1/2" shorter than the non-syncro starter.

Now this explains alot. First off many dif locks that I have seem are broken. As usual, some butcher mechanic was in there trying to put the wrong parts in there. Also this is why the syncro turns slower than the 2 WD Vanagon. NOW, Why then, do the parts people not have a seperate listing for a Syncro starter? Am I missing something? Anyone have an old starter hanging around they would measure for me? The center housing of the shorter starter measures 2 3/8" in length, and the bigger starter measures 2 3/4" length.
