John, KEP offers adapters for the 930-4spd and the G50-5spd transaxles, both of which are very strong. I think it would be much simpler to use a Vanagon trans with some mild strengthening measures, as it is a very capable box to start with. I used a massaged Buick V-6 in a stock '78 Westy for years with no problems. Of course, that trans only had 150k miles on it when converted! The TDI is not a wildly powerful engine. Put on some slightly taller tires to compensate for lower gear ratios. Larry |
