If you are looking for a performance transaxle then you might consider the Porsche G50 5 spd. No info on it handy but if it can take the power of the later 911s then it should take whatever a TDI/Audi/2.0L 4cyl, etc. can dish out. In good used condition they are just about the same price as a fresh slightly 'custom' built 091-1 4 speed gearbox. You would need to figure out how to mount it in the vehicle and then connect the shift linkage and axles which adds to the overall cost and frustration levels. Interesting idea, however. I'll see what I can turn up (in my vast free time!) as I am sure that someone else has already BTDT with this.
