Hello All, I just purchased my first vanagon an 84GL and it sure is alot of fun to drive. I have a list of things my baby needs that is a mile long so I am going to take care of the maintenance in waves.....The first wave will involve all new rotors drums pads and shoes, brake fluid flush, coolant flush, gear oil change etc. all the basics. My questions are........What weight and brand of gear oil are people in VW land using? I'm partial to mobil-1 synthetic but have only found it in 75W90 (will this work?). Are vented rotors available for 84 vanagons? How many people are running Bilstien struts and where did you get them? I would also like to add alloy wheels without spending $300+ what 14"or 15"' VW/Audi wheels fit with the right offset? I have seen a vanagon with Mercedes alloys on it, any body on the list running these? And last a trouble shooting type question: Last night when I picked up my bus it ran great, no hesitation or stalling but whenever I came to a stop light and the engine sat at idle the oil light would begin to flicker, if I revved the engine it would dissapear but came back when the engine dropped to idle again. It sure would be nice to have a guage package and a tach! Any sage words of wisdom from the elders are appreciated. Fell free to send responses privately or via list. Thanks, this is a great list.
