The small little fibers that people like me have inhaled while working with 'glass', including sanding it, cause a condition known as silicosis. Its a scarring of the lungs wherever the minute sharp glass fibers have lodged and couldn't be removed by the lungs. The scarring is a 'cordoning off' action by the lungs to this irritant and results in diminshed oxygen utilization capacity. -Dana-
