Brown as in milk chocolate brown?  Then thats a ground wire.

Yellow as in cheeseball crimp on style connector??  Then thats
the PO's attempt to fix where the old connector broke off.  VW
did not use that style of crimp connector.  Install a good
replacement and make sure the grounding point is clean with
no oxidation.  Vanagons hate bad grounds!!
