Red Line Oil recommends only the MT-90 for the Vanagon transaxle due the its higher loads. MTL is intended for vehicles that use motor oil or ATF in their manual transmissions or transaxles.

I have used MTL in my MGB and MT-90 in the Vanagon for about five years now. Both shift easier, and the synthetics don't thicken as badly in cold weather. I still change it every 50,000 miles.

Be careful with additives, some can be too slick for proper syncro ring friction, resulting in grinding shifts.
