Subject: Dashboard surgery... 85 Vanagon

Since i have to drain coolant again to replace some leaking or near leaking parts, I'm thinking about pulling the dashboard and replacing my squealing fresh air fan (sqealing for two years, but will not die) and putting a new heater core in.

I had read in here some years ago, that the steering column had to be moved or dislodged to get the dash out. Anyone know if this is true? I've removed and replaced a few dashboards before, the Vanagon looks like it should be a piece of cake, compared to replacing a heater core in an air conditioned Jetta.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm ordering parts from Camelback VW tomorrow--they're good guys.
