I have always owned Westy-type VWs, never a non-Westy unit. They have always been my daily commuter as well, then occasionally change roles to be the family camper. For me, the Westy side of the Vanagon is the primary reason I own it. The occasional wonderful camping experiences justify the high cost/maintenance associated with Vanagons. If you like to camp, I don't think you'd have "boat owner's syndrome" at all.
