Most "populated" campgrounds that I have been to already have electrical
power.  If you are out in the boondocks with nobody else around for miles,
run a small block Chevy with just headers and power a small encampment.  But
if there are others within earshot, the smaller Hondas that look like
suitcases are ideal because they are so quiet.  They are not any louder than
some kids running around enjoying themselves outdoors or a friendly game of
softball a few hundred yards away.  Most RV power units are heavily muffled
and are not of any annoyance.  A visit to any small engine shop can supply
you with an apprpriate muffler to suit your needs.
    I've used a generator while releasing weather balloons from my camper
for a scientific study and it worked well.  Just plug it in where you would
plug in normal shore power.  I had 2 laptops, the balloon tracking unit and
various signal amplifiers going, along with 2 helium tanks and a great place
to take a nap while waiting for the sounding to finish.
