As far as volts, 120V should be enough unless you're going to run a very large appliance like a clothes dryer or hot water heater in which case you might need 240V. The wattage required depends on what you want to run off the generator. Personally, I can't think of any reason to take a generator camping but I'm a minimalist of sorts and think the Vanagon itself is luxury enough.
