Bentley says that joint must be checked for wear if boot is torn due to the likelihood that dirt has entered. I would suggest checking and cleaning rather then just re-packing and replacing boot. I haven't disassembled one myself so can't attest to the difficulty level. Anyhow if you would like to give it a try and don't have the manual I can scan the relevant pages and send them to you.
