I have seen several people with 215R75-15" tires on their Vanagon (all Syncro owners) and they experience no rubbing problems. These tires measure 27.6" tall. Once you get over 28.5" tall you will start running into problems with the tires rubbing up front.

Seeing how you do not have a Syncro having larger tires in the rear won't matter, 29" should be considered a maximum before you start hitting the control arm.
