The stalling and the noise may be unrelated. I've had trouble with stalling and bad idle due to two hoses coming off in the engine compartment. I think they are part of the gas tank venting system and pipe vapor back into the engine. Both are on the right side of the compartment but since mine is an '80 Vanagon and has a throttle body all might not have the same hose arrangement. The hoses seem to have a dramatic effect on correct mixture and idle. > loud clicking sound when accelerating. keeps stalling and isn't running that > well. so far in the past month i've had the distributor cap and rotor, fuel > pump, and vacuum hoses replaced. i have no idea what the problem could be. > lately it seems to run okay for a week or two and then s#@% the bed. excuse > my french. The stalling seems very similar to what I experienced and seemed to be due to the hose moving and not being sealed in addition to weather changes. The clicking sounds much more like a CV joint to me...these do start all of a sudden as I found out this past winter. Does the sound seem to disappear or get worse or better depending on the direction you might turn? There are four joints in the rear of a 2 wheel drive and if one is bad it will sound worse or better depending on the amount of stress which is why it can sound off when you accelerate. Does it go away completely if you engage the clutch? With stress of the joints the worn part doesn't make any noise then. I'm hoping this is your problem.
