Just wondering if anyone knows why VW decided to get away from boxer motors. Being the company's heritage as well as being a good design (well balanced, low center of gravity plus that neat sound) I would have thought they would have stuck with it. Subaru is using boxer's to this day, exclusively I believe, so it is certainly do-able. Obviously, there were some bad experiences with the vanagon motors but they had already moved away from boxers in other models at this point. I'm sure there is lots of speculation on this but I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas for the real reasons. My guess is that perhaps the feeling was that boxers were just to unconventional to attract the mainstream? mark |
