Volks, The PO of my 89 Westy apparently spilled more than he ate when using the kitchen/tables. Consequently, the carpeting next to the refrig/sink/stove was stained and a tad unsightly. When trying to decide between new carpeting and any other alternative, I considered my own sloppiness and the usual state of my 8 yr. old's shoes when she comes in from the outside. I quickly decided that a new carpet would probably soon be as nasty as the current one so I went looking for an alternative. I finally settled on the cheapest, rectangle, clear plastic desk/chair mat that I could find at our office supply store. It was 46" X 64". As the interior of the Westy is 46" X 50" I only needed to cut a small portion off one end. I easily did this with aviation snips. I tucked the cut edge under the leading edge of the fold down rear seat and pushed the rest tight against the refrig and the wall behind the front seats. Now I have a scuff proof, heavy duty, wall-to-wall, plastic floormat that wipes clean and is equally functional as it is pleasing to the eye. It took me about an hour to cut to size and the mat was $40. It will probably serve the life of the vehicle. FWIW Jim in Iowa 91 Passat Wagon GL 89 Westy 66 Beetle |
