it's someone's (suv owner - I am convinced) hokey-ass idea that if they somehow convince everyone in the US to not buy gas on Apr. 30th, they will overthrow the oil-moguls & force them to drop their prices to "normal" (read-below average) prices. I got the chain letter last night & proceeded to rail the sender... It won't work for many reasons - oil sales are based on an average, not daily consumption. Oil prices are fixed on a monthly basis. If you buy gas the day before or the day after you have essentially no effect on the market. Even though a supply related event can drastically raise prices instantly, such a demand related event will not lower prices instantly. When prices dropped last year it was not instantly 1.25 to .78$. It was a gradual price drop over 6-7 months, caused by CONSTANT overproducing of non-compliant OPEC member-nations. We aren't talking a few extra barrels a week, we are talking MILLIONS a DAY. Let's say for a second that every American doesn't fill up their 35gal SUV tank that Friday - you have only cut a small percentage of the market out for an instant (in economic time). What about the millions of barrels consumed in manufacturing, consumed by air-lines (you think they won't fill up?) consumed by the military, consumed in production of electricity, etc. Consumer gasoline sales are only a small percentage of total oil consumption in the US. This doesn't even take into consideration the percentage of Americans that will not be reached by this pitiful e-mail. Hundreds of Millions aren' even online TO get it, and millions more instantly delete the crap, and millions more will fill up if they need gas and the note be damned... Quit kidding yourselves people In the words of the Borg, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE You wanna support something worthwhile, take a second & write a letter to your senator encouraging support of a flat tax.
