Subject: exhaust gasket advice?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Yo Vanagoneers,

I just tried to repair an exhaust leak on my 89 between the cat and the muffler. Was going to use some hi temp RTV goop. Couldn't get the top bolt out for lack of clearance for wrench. Looks like it has to be unbolted at the exhaust to cat flange and drop the cat and muffler in one piece to fix the cat to muffler leak.

Prob is, it looks like a donut gasket or something(?) between the exhaust and cat. The pictures in Bentley don't help. If anyone out there can tell me what I will need to get the cat bolted back (with no leaks) please let me know. I'm not going to take it any further apart until I get more info. VW parts are not easy to come by in Ogden UT and if a special gasket is necessary I'll have to order it.

TIA for any advice

Keep to the High Road Fred 89 Westy
