Horace, I'm pretty sure K&N makes a filter that will fit in the stock Vanagon airbox. I don't have a part number--maybe someone else on the list can help with this. I recently installed a high performance air intake system from MSDS in my syncro. This system replaces the airbox and bolts right up to the AFM. Easy install, except that you have to fabricate a bracket or something to support the AFM. I was a bit skeptical of any HP increase but was pleasantly suprised after going for a test drive. The throttle is now more responsive and it does feel like I've gained a couple of HP. FWIW, I was previously using one of the heavy duty syncro-style filters.
