Subject: Success: tachometer in my TD Syncro Westy!

Ever since I converted the Westy to the 1.9 TD I have been without a tachometer, as some of you know, the diesel gets it's tach signal from the alternator speed, which is why the gas model's tach won't work. I finally located an instrument cluster from a 1989 Jetta TD. The tachometer is externally identical with the Vanagon unit, so it screwed into the housing perfectly. The only fabrication req'd was to get the proper faceplate. I used the top 2/3 of the diesel tach faceplate, and the bottom 1/3 of the Vanagon faceplate, screwing them to the housing with the diesel one in front of the Vanagon plate. (used sharp tin-snips to trim each one) This enabled me to use all the original Vanagon gauge layout. Voila! Engine speed now known! Looks factory unless you look real close for the faceplate trim lines! In the process of getting the proper gauge cluster, I ended up with an extra from a '94 Golf/Jetta TD, if someone needs that let me know.

Karl
