John, my son has run a tinting business for 15 years in the deep south. Does automotive, commercial and residential work. I have worked with him on many jobs.

My '88 is tinted all the way around and believe me it makes a difference. I find that here in New Mexico it is especially nice to have.

I recommend that you let the professionals do it. And go for a film with a modest light passage. You will hate limo tint if you go that route. Can't tell you how many people I have seen come into my son's shop to have it removed.

Select a metal sputtered film for best heat rejection. It has a super thin application of metal applied. An application of space age technology. Also the new materials have a special scratch resistant coating. Helps in scratch control but doesn't stop it.

If you have the Pro's do it, you have the benefit of some really good warranties. The quality of films has gotten so good that the manufacturers offer lifetime warranties. And they are good anywhere in the couintry where there is an authorized shop using their film.

DO NOT clean your tint surfaces with ANY ammonia containing cleaners. It takes the oils and plasticizers out of the plastic film and makes it brittle , ultimately destroying it.

Professional trick...in lieu of purchased cleaners, use a little Johnsons baby shampoo...about two tablespoons to a pint of water. Spray on, wipe off with soft cloth like T-shirt material.

I go with Unca' Joel on the windsheild strip. I didn't have it installed, and I regret it. Were I near my son's place I would have it done. Very worthwhile.

One caution. The tint laws vary from state to state. So be careful as to how dark a tint you get. I have found the really dark tints to be an annoyance and vision problem at night. Recommend staying away from them, for your sake and everyone elses who is out there with you on the road.

Good luck in your quest.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post about getting my vanagon windows tinted. I've been thoroughly convinced that its worth it since I didn't receive a single negative on any aspect. I'm still trying to decide weather to attempt it myself or pay the bucks and have it done professionally. Oh well, I have to make up my own mind. Thanks again to everyone for the information.

John
