Katherine, I travel for weeks and months with my laptop in the vanagon. First, I keep it out of sight as much as possible... try not to use it while people are looking. Second, I hide it... I store it below/behind the hanging cloths. Third, I am installing a car alarm mainly to protect the contents. Fourth, if I stop at a motel or a friend's house I take it in with me overnight. Finally, I believe it is covered by my insurance. That's about it.
