Subject: Ignition Timing Scale

I recently bought an ingition timing scale from Bus Depot. OK so now im looking at my pulley and all I can think of is that it attaches in the same holes the fan guard (the plastic mesh looking dome thingy) is screwed in to.... but if I do that the 0 degree mark is waaayyy left of the crack in the crank case. Is that where is it supposed to be? I thank anyone in advance for any ideas.
