The woman with the broken shoulder who is selling her Westy because she
can't raise the top reminded me that the Eurovan Winnebago conversion
uses gas struts to help raise the top.

It looks to me at first glance that this concept could be applied to the
Vanagon Wesfalia without removing the existing jackknife mechanism.

Anybody investigated or done this?  We are all getting older you know!
