These machines really are cool. But like any machine, they have to be maintained properly. If the the proper preventive maintenance is done, our beloved Vanagons will rarely let you down. It was quite evident that in the case of my '88 GL model the PO ignored everything. I paid the bill to bring it back up to snuff, but now I should not have any more trouble for a while. ....and it has only 73,000 miles on it now.

Nice story. I appreciate the tips. The little 4" hose was the first one to fail on mine. I figure it should be replaced with the water pump at about 100K miles. Someday I'll find the thermostat and replace it, too. These machines sure are nice to travel in as long as they keep traveling. Regards, Tom Neal '87 syncro
