Sounds like an all around bad idea. First if the old boot is torn
there is going to be dirt in the CV joint. The only question is how much
dirt, which will determine how long the joint will last. Second all the
split joints I have seen were not symmetrical around the center of
rotation. It seems to me they would fly apart after sustained driving at
speed. Third it is really cramped quarters in the suspension box of the
outer CV. Not enough room for my two big hands. I think it would be
easier to do it right the first time.
