All the Vanagons I have seen and worked on this resistor was only there if there was "factory" AC. I have personlly owned 4 Vanagon,3 of them 1986 models. This has held true. Now i'm sure the 85 and prior are different.

Does your Syncro have a 3 speed FAn?

Anyone else have input on this that would be helpful?
