Thanks to all of you who have replied. There was a reason for my asking if I should seal it in place. When the old starter came off it was well stuck on (had a hell of a time getting it off!) using a paper gasket. Didn't know if this was original or not.

I will follow the collective advise of my fellow listers and bolt it on sans gasket.
