I used the "split-boot-with-glue" in question on a Jetta in an act of post-graduate desperation. I got what I paid for.
Lasted around 10k, if I recall. Just enough time to save the cabbage for a half-axle replacement...

I need your help to tell if this product will work for us. The manufacturer

I have a totally torn outer CV boot (at the collar), and I was scoping out a
replacement.
Canadian Tire (Canada's biggest FLAPS) has a replacement kit with grease and
clamps etc for $14.99, which I thought was fair.
Then, a Corporal I know saw me and recommended that instead of that type
boot, I investigate this "split-type" boot. It's blue in color. Says he's
used them and it is the way to go. The idea is that you just cut off your
old boot, clean and push grease into your joint, and then wrap the "split"
boot around. You then seal the seam with the compound they provide, and use
the clamps provided.
The boot is only good for outer CV joints, and will work with a huge number
of vehicles. I called the company to make sure that it will work with the
Vanagon, and they said it will, if....
...If you currently have the CV boot style that uses clamps it will, no
question about it. However....they didn't know about the other kind (which I
have, I think)....
My CV boot doesn't "appear" to have clamps. It appears that at each end of
the boot there is a black collar or cylinder of some kind. Maybe I don't
know what I am seeing, as I AM a newbie. So.....
...the question really becomes: If one has boots that DON'T use clamps on
their CV Joints, can boots WITH clamps be substituted?
Also: ARE there CV boot styles without clamps, sort of "press-on", or am I
mistaken?
This boot kit costs about $20.00 Canadian, and has instructions for
installing it in different vehicles, and a toll-free support number.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
After $300 in slashed tire costs last week, the last thing I need is a $180
boot replacement cost (from my FLVWSS)
