I have successfully used 'JB Weld' for this application for years with success. In my Dodge Cummins repair manual, it even lists JB Weld as an application for use in field operations in third world countries where parts are scarce . . . I once had an honest-church-going-really-knows-his-VW's-mechanic who really believed in that goo also. In fact, he used it to repair the head on an upright bus engine. It lasted about 5,000 miles before grenading the engine. I know look for such signs of expedient measures when determining whether I would use a mechanic. But it may work just fine for exhausts.....
