Sorry to here about your loss. My 82 burned up last fall - pretty sure it started in the auxiliary gas heater. Insurance company wouldn't repair it, and offered Cdn$3500 + taxes. After a month of fighting, I got them up to Cdn$4500, which was reduced to $4000+taxes when I elected to keep the vehicle and have it repaired. Cost was Cdn$2000 for replacing of wiring harness, battery cables, fuel lines, gas tank piping, gas heater, right passenger and sliding windows. Still fighting with mechanic who screwed up the wiring (had to go elsewhere to finally get the stereo properly re-wired to the auxiliary battery), and put in the wrong sliding window. We ground down the metal floor, cut and installed new plywood floor, primed with smoke retarding primer, and repainted floor and interior cabinets and shelves. We've since spend another Cdn$1200 on parts for the above, new exhaust and heater box. Hopefully were now just about set for the camping season. If you elect to keep it, try to find someone who really knows their VW campers.
