This is especially important if you have a camper. When I was trying to straighten out my PO's tire buying mishap, I found out that when I called several tire dealers most of the time they recommended tires that were suitable for the lighter weight non-camper vanagon, but didn't have a sufficient load rating for the camper version. Most of the time their price sheets / computer checks didn't even have an entry for the camper version. If you told them the exact tire you wanted or specified it must be at least a load rating C, they could help. If you relied on them to tell you an appropriate tire for the camper version, in my experience their recommendation was usually wrong. That's how my PO ending up buying what he was told was the correct tire for the van. He got a tire appropriate for a passenger vanagon, but not for the heavier camper.
