Subject: 84 Pulsing idle UPDATE 2, zu hohe Leerlaufdrehzahl

Listers,

I am still searching for the cause of my idle problems. It started out as a pulsing idle problem, once the engine was warm. Cold idle was high, but did not pulse. Now I disconnected the throttle valve switch resulting in a too high idle overall with no change between cold and warm idle. But no pulsing anymore. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs and air filter have been replaced. What should I do now?

>> Check the O2 sensor before you replace it. All you need is a volt meter.

Fluctuates around 0.5V. If I change the mixture (tweak the pot in the air flow meter) it moves to 1V and 0V respevtively, but after a few seconds comes back to 0.5V again. So I guess O2 sensor is OK.

> >- check the coolant temp sensor

Coolant temp sensor: 3KOhms when cold, 300 Ohms when warm. So I guess coolant temp sensor is OK.

> >- check the air flow meter

At start of lower range (no flow at all) change of resistance is a bit jerky and pot shows wear, but within idle range (lower half of range) operation is smooth. So this shouldn't be the problem either.

> I'll bet your auxillary air regulator is stuck open,

Disconnected aux air hose from main air hose between air flow meter and throttle body. Sealed off end of hose and hole in big hose. Still, idle is too high. So aux air valve isn't stuck open either.

> or your throttle plate is sticky.

How do I test it? Outside mechanism returns all the way, can't push it further than where to it returns by itself. Lubricated springs and mechanism on top of throttle body.

Marcus
