        The heat is produced by the current running through the
resistance in the wires/connections.You can increase the size of the wire
or increase the number of wires to decrease the resistance.
        Cleaning up and tightening connections helps a lot too. If you
have a digital voltmeter measure the voltage drop across the terminal
while it is drawing current. Then clean up the terminal and remeasure.
This will show  if you made any progress.
        If still no luck you might think about adding some relays to
control the current.
