Steve, just wanted to tell you I run a 1981 GTI steering wheel in my 1988 Syncro. The wheel fits without any problem, and both horn and turn signal canceller works perfectly. My Syncro is of the Armstrong type now, as I do not have power steering, and will be worse this summer, as I am installing 27" BFGs.
