Mark,

It seems to be the consensus that Michelins are THE tire to buy. I purchased an immaculate 89 Westy last fall that came with US made 27x8.5 load range D off road truck tires. It is also consensus that they're not supposed to work on a Vanagon. I was a long time loaf owner and the van does ride much rougher.

Howver, I'm not convinced it's because of the tires. When I posted a question regarding similarities and differences between vans and loafs, one listee noted the vanagon has a less "compliant" rear suspension. I believe the idea has merit.

I have enjoyed having greater ground clearance with the big meats. A listee also mentioned that 27x8.5's are the tallest 14 in tire made. IMHO they handle well in town, on the highway, and especially off-road. Since off-road camping is a major reason I own a Westy, I will replace them when needed with the same size.

BTW, I was a type2 listee for some time before my bus was crashed. People on that list swear by Yokohamas.

Fred 89 Westy ALWAYS keep to the high road (the scenery is much nicer)
