probably related to a vacuum leak before the turbo.. i doubt its the ECU ive never had a 5k ECU go bad. did it kind of "buck" while giving it gas?

The car also seemed to run rather hot. The temp guage sat at the middle (straight up) or a little hotter whe idling at a standstill. Is this normal?

its normal for gauge needle to be at halfway (straight up) when idling when hot but it shouldnt go too much more to the right...and the fan should be running constantly at that point.

Are the miles too high on this vehicle? Will all the electronic doodads go out one by one? Are parts expensive? Is there anything else I should watch for? The dealer was asking $2150 but has already told me (unsolicited) that he'll take $1950. How's that price? If I seriously consider buying it I will take it to a mechanic for a check, but that costs $50+. >>

i have 4 audi 5000's. 2 are turbos, and 2 are turbo quattros. the lowest mileage car i have is my pearl '86 5kTQ, with 140k mi, and the highest is my black '86 5k TQ with 180k miles. i just bought my pearl '86 5k TQ last week, for US $1000 and i felt that was a steal. i would have paid $3000 for it, (if they were asking that much) because it is in great shape. i have a '84 5k Turbo, that i bought for $5000 in 1988 when it was 4 years old. (it was $22,000 new....remember how CBS "60 Minutes" killed the resale of that car with their "unintended acceleration" hype?) ive owned it for more than 10 yrs, and it had never left me stranded aside from 3 years ago when the turbo blew on the PA turnpike. (coming back from Ron's house!! ) i put another rebuilt turbo in (about $400), and its been great since. its still my daily driver. i wont sell it because i will never get what i want for it. the 5 cyl engines are basically bulletproof, and they are far more reliable than any vanagon ive ever owned. they are very dependable, and fun to drive. the major downfall of the audi 5k is the power steering (hydraulic) system. when you own a audi 5k, you will find that a leaky PS rack/pump wont bother you after awhile... :<) (keep a few quarts of hydraulic fluid around :<) little stuff that i stock up on at the junkyard are: window switches and regulators, doorhandles, heater blower motors, and other misc electrical parts. it has not "nickle and dimed" me more than any other 12-15 year old car. any more questions, let me know... also, there is a list specifically for the audi's: quattro@coimbra.ans.net (to post questions to the quattro list)

have fun w/ your new audi
