Subject: Phosphate Free: How to determine?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Hello everyone, I'm new to the list.

I've recently purchased a 1985 Vanagon GL in pretty decent shape (not perfect, but hey, it runs!). I'm so happy! I've been wanting one of these since I was a kid (sorry if this offends older members).

Anyhow, I've been reading the various FAQ out there, and one of the high and mighty points is to use ONLY Phosphate-Free antifreeze (or else risk head gasket problems). SO I ask.... How can you tell? I mean, when I'm walking down the asile of US-1 Autoparts or even a Sears, and I come across the yellow jugs, is there some way to tell which are phosphate free and which are not?

Some say that only the "Blue" antifreeze is any good, but; A) Is this actually the case? and B) How can you tell when they are usually in opaque containers?

Can anyone recommend a particular brand/type that they have had astounding results with?

Many thanks, and sorry if this is such a dopey question - I've only gotten the darn thing a week ago, there's tons for me to learn over the coming years!
