That property is called "visco elasticity". You can make a visco elastic substance by taking a cup of water and adding corn starch to it until you get a thick goo (about 1/2 to 1 lb). You can hit it with a hammer, and it'll shatter, but it still flows like a liquid. This stuff (often called oobleck, after a similar substance featured in a Dr. Suess book) is loads of fun at parties.
