Steve, I had the same symptoms in my 90 Westy Syncro last year. I fixed it by replacing the water level rod/float (there are mini switches inside the rod and I had blown one or two) and by having one of the components on the indicator light circuit board replaced. I figure I had shorted something on that circuit while mucking around... cost me about $100.... another good reason to disconnect the battery ground before doing electrical work on your van.
