I don't know what the relay or switch is for but I'm Charlie, that relay is to shut off the 12v power to the reefer except when the engine is running. The vanagons with no propane use 12v from the aux battery to drive the reefer, and have an isolation relay that parallels the two batteries when the motor is running (heavier relay wired differently).
