Not having a water-cooled van, I can't be positive. Having owned a number of air cooled vans, I can say that the air cooled power plant is self-contained. Meaning to say, other than the fuel injection computer, and some other devices the would be easy to affix to the firewall there are no ancillary devices that are required to support the air cooled motor.

In addition, the "hole" for the motor appears to be virtually identical between a water air cooled motor, if I recall correctly. This is very important, because the tinware that covers the motor must seal at the edge with a small foam rubber seal to keep HOT exhaust and used cooling air (which is now very hot) below the motor, forcing the fan to pull its air through the side vents for the motor. You would obviously need the air-cooled mount bar.

The only other fly in the ointment I can imagine is the heater, and heater ducting. Since the heater for the air cooled motor is vastly different from the water cooled motor, this might be an additional concern.

<< File: ATT00000.html >> Hello,

If I where to come accross an eighties air-cooled vanagon motor, what modifications would have to be made to put it in an '85 van? It seems logical with all the problems with WC vans, but is it possible?

-Ben
